Landscape design can be thought of as an art form where the outdoor area is the painter’s canvas which needs to be filled with aesthetic value. One of the distinctions of this type of art is that it is in a constant state of change. The professional who does backyard landscaping in Monmouth County has to consider the area from several perspectives. It should be visually pleasing of course, but it must also have an element of function and be ecologically responsible in design. The goal is to incorporate all of the basic elements so that they collectively create a unified landscape design. There are four basic elements that must be brought together to form a landscape that is aesthetically pleasing and matches the exterior design of the home. Read more »

Energy Saving Ideas

Most people understand that energy efficiency equals budgetary efficiency, and so we see a growing number homeowners who are looking for ways to make their homes more energy efficient.  One way to introduce energy efficiency into your home without the need for any major construction is to add awnings to the exteriors of your home that have significant window spaces.  You may ask why people seek out homes with large windows if they want to be energy efficient, and the answer is that the windows can be very efficient, as long as the homeowner has the proper shading systems to control the amount of light that enters the home.  In cooler months sun streaming through large windows can help heat the home, and in the summertime, strategic shading over those same windows can help cool the home.  And that is where awnings come in.

In fact, in 2012, the Professional Awning Manufacturers Association (PAMA) did a study that showed fabric awnings could save homeowners up to 50% on their warm weather energy bills by reducing the air conditioning load in hot weather months.  Also, the US Governments Department of Energy advises window awnings for “reducing solar heat gain in the summer by up to 65% on south-facing windows and 77% on west-facing windows.  You can use an awning to shade one window or have an awning custom made to shade the entire side of your house.”   So, you can indeed have your windows and keep your home cool too. Deciding on window treatments for your home can be challenging. So many different windows, so many different shapes, so many different types of window treatments: your options are nearly endless. If you’re redecorating or remodeling your home, think about different types of window treatments available. Also, what type of home do you have: Modern, contemporary, country, etc?

Consider the amount of sunlight that enters through your windows. You most likely aren’t going to want to dress your front windows identical to your back windows. If you want to be able to control the amount of heat and light that enters your room relatively easy, folding shades or even roller shades might be your best options. Both allow you to open and close based on the amount of light you want entering the room.

Depending on your style, customize your folding shades or roller shades to your liking. If you’re looking for something simple, a honeycomb-type shade might work best. These window shades are available in a variety of fabric and pleat choices. With roller shades, you also have design flexibility, but roller shades tend to appear more fashionable and stylish.

Aside from simple folding shades and roller shades, window treatments come in all different shapes and size. Open your shades horizontally with simple folding shades or open your window shades vertically with draperies or wooden blinds, depending on your personal preference.
